I have white faux wood blinds in my bedroom and they don't look cheap at all. I think they would look great in your kitchen. You could also put interior shutters, that would look pretty nice too. Clearly, s/he is thinking of vinyl blinds and did not read that you are considering faux wood, which looks very classy. HGTV's Spice Up My Kitchen uses blinds all the time. Though I do like the suggestions of adding a touch of color, and you can totally do that by adding decorative tapes on faux wood blinds. This one has a bordeaux color - since you mentioned burgundy. You can also add a swag of another curtain at the top of the window(possibly in the burgandy you mentioned earlier) as an accent and punch of color in a rather neutral kitchen.
