How about a traverse rod with drapes. The drapes really keep the hot or cold out, and you they easily open or close. I use mine and i love it.

I don't know where you are but places like Kent Building Supplies, Home Depot and Lowe's (in Canada) carry 2" faux wood blinds that have the wood grain. They come in white, light wood, cherry and a dark brown colour. They are much better in kitchens and bathrooms than real wood because of the steam. These stores will even custom cut widths to your soecifications at no charge. You just remove slats to give you the appropriate length.

I used verticals in my kitchen sliding door for many rears, I tired of them and eventually made curtains hung by metal rings for easy slide. They keep the hot sun out, and in the winter insulates the door very nicely. I also have (horizontal) wood blinds other windpows, they are beautiful, but very heavy when I need to draw them up to open a window. I imagine wood verticals w/b really heavy to move. If I had only 2-choices wood verticals or fabric verticals, I would pick the later. Much easier to operate. Go for a good brand.
